What:

Picture
The Turning the Tide Summit is a student-lead initiative to provoke change in the world in coordination with the Stephen Lewis Foundation, the Ujamaa Grandma’s and Westmount Charter School. While the primary focus for the fundraising is for orphans in Africa, there will be a variety of speakers available, focusing on the Millennium Development Goals and how students can affect change themselves. Keynote speakers will include Mark A. Kostash (Bio) and Will Gadd (Bio) who will be talking about the current epidemic of HIV/AIDS in Africa and how youth as a whole can get themselves involved in the international community. The Summit will include 500+ high school students from Alberta, as well as teachers and the parent community.

Why and How:

Picture
The purpose of the Turning the Tide Summit is to raise funds for the Stephen Lewis Foundation (which helps orphans and their families that are affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa), to develop a higher social consciousness within the community, and to educate and inspire youth to make change in our world, and give them the tools to do so.  Through two keynote presentations and a wide array of break-out sessions (selected by the individual participants upon registration), students will be exposed to issues that face our world in correlation with the Millennium Development Goals and ultimately learn how to initiate change.

Who Made This Possible:

Grandmothers for Grandmothers is a campaign launched by the Stephen Lewis Foundation to build solidarity, raise awareness and mobilize support in Canada for Africa's grandmothers. These dedicated hard working grandmas are those who have made this summit possible by organizing the keynote address by Stephen Lewis. The only thing they ask in return is for youth across the province to engage in their challenge to raise funds for the Stephen Lewis Foundation.

Fundraising Challenge:

Grandmothers for Grandmothers invites all schools to fundraise within their local communities towards the Stephen Lewis Foundation which is focused on helping orphans in Africa.

When/Where:

On May 3rd, 2010 at Westmount Charter School in Calgary, Alberta the entire day will be devoted to promoting change in our world.
